《紫陽花日記》和渡邊淳一的代表作《失樂園》一樣，都是直面中年人的情感困境。如果說《失樂園》演繹的是愛情的理想版，那麼在《紫陽花日記》中渡邊淳一讓我們看到的是中年情感的現實版︰愛情沒有在最美的時候定格、凝固、永恆，而是在現實中消耗、磨損、流逝；如果說《失樂園》中的他們是以生命表達了對愛情的堅信，那麼《紫陽花日記》中的他們是以日常的生活提出了對愛情的疑問︰婚姻生活窒息了愛？

川島省吾和志麻子是在日本很典型的一對中產階級夫婦，住在東京高尚社區，丈夫經營著一家私立醫院，妻子在家料理家務。結婚十五年，有一兒一女。

看似平靜的生活被丈夫在妻子臥房偶然發現的一本日記給徹底打亂了。在這本日記里，妻子以女人的敏感和細心，詳細記錄了她對丈夫不忠的點點觀察，但在平日生活中卻又絕口不提此事。得知自己的婚外情被妻子發現，省吾大為緊張，可妻子不說，自己也不能主動招認。于是，夫妻間開始了一場讓雙方都深感痛苦的“暗戰”。
