一般人都以為，人要年紀大了，腦力才會退化，變得老是忘東忘西，或是喪失思考能力。不過，美國維吉尼亞大學最新研究指出，許多智能退化的徵狀在年輕時便會出現，而人類的腦力高峰約在廿二歲，廿七歲起便會開始老化。


維吉尼亞大學研究團隊在《老化神經生物學》（Neurobiology of Aging）期刊發表的這份實驗報告，係以二千名年齡介於十八至六十歲的男女為測驗對象，前後研究時間長達七年。


接受測驗者大多身體健康且受過良好教育，在各種測驗中，他們須完成視覺拼圖、詳記語句和故事細節，並可猜解文字和符號。類似的測試常用於診斷智能障礙或腦力退化，例如失智症。


研究發現，在十二次測驗中，表現最好的平均年齡是廿二歲。在理解力、思考速度和空間感三項測試，成績與表現最佳的廿二歲有較大落差的年齡是廿七歲。此外，記憶力下滑的平均年齡是卅七歲，而四十二歲之後記憶力更是急遽衰退。


研究主持人薩爾紹斯教授表示，此項研究結果顯示，現今專為年長者設計的預防或改善智能老化相關狀況的療程，可能需把治療對象的設定年齡再提早些。他在報告中寫道：「研究結果證實，健康且受到良好教育的成年人，在廿或卅幾歲時便會開始出現一些老化相關狀況。」


比較特別的是，此項研究指稱，自字彙或一般常識的測驗表現分析，累積而得的知識在六十歲之前，都可持續進步。
