野馬是美國西部數百年來的典型象徵，但美國聯邦「土地管理局」表示，圈養野馬耗資不貲，預算「撞牆」，故有意大規模撲殺。消息傳出後，保育人士大表抗議，但除非大富豪施援，否則有逾三萬匹野馬難逃被宰殺的命運。


英國《獨立報》十一月卅日報導，近幾年來美國土地管理局把三萬三千多匹野馬圈攏起來，而且移往愈來愈貧瘠的公有土地，以讓地給牛隻放牧業者，減輕養殖場牧草被野馬啃食的壓力。


但圈養野馬的草料與飲水成本攀升，土地管理局遂正在考慮一項所謂「安樂死」的方案，把很多健康野馬送去屠宰場，製成肉排，再外銷至法國。美國國會「政府責任署」最近在報告中揭示這項提議，引起保育人士憤怒，指責土地管理局剛開始就沒必要圈養野馬，來討好畜牧業。


「野馬收養協會」理事長雷諾森表示，官方稱野地裡太多野馬，有必要把馬兒聚攏起來，但現在荒野裡只有三萬多匹，而且分布範圍廣達十幾個州。單在內華達州，土地管理局就控有四千七百萬英畝土地；農場業主有錢有勢，養得起華府說客，圈養以外的草地就歸放牧牛隻者所有，因此官方給野馬適應期很短，還想把牠們消滅。


對很多野馬而言，目前活命的唯一希望在德州石油富豪皮金斯的妻子梅德蘭。梅德蘭最近表示打算設立廣達一百萬英畝的庇護區，放養官方捕獲的野馬，亦即把把私人土地變成鄉村主題公園。
