人種間除了膚色、髮色、眼睛顏色不同，臼齒也不一樣。三軍總醫院研究發現，四分之一國人的下顎第一大臼齒有三個牙根，與醫學教科書說的兩個牙根不同。

為什麼有些黃種人的下顎第一大臼齒有比白種人多了一個牙根？發表這項研究的三總牙醫部主治醫師傅鍔說：「原因實在不清楚」他說，曾有人推測可能是遠古人類遷徙時，黃種人移動到較冷的北方，氣候寒冷，食物較硬，所以遺留多牙根的基因，讓臼齒咬合的力量更大。

傅鍔曾在美國執業五年，治療過不少白人病患，他回到台灣後，發現台灣人臼齒牙根外露的情況特別多，他懷疑：「難道與人種有關？」於是整理院內牙周病病患資料，在一百九十七位患者的Ｘ光片中，發現有五十三個人下顎第一大臼齒有三個牙根，和一般醫學教科書上教兩個牙根不一樣。

上述發現已發表於美國牙周病醫學雜誌，傅鍔並搜集全台北、中、南近六百名患者的電腦斷層掃描影像，找出兩下顎第一大臼齒都有清楚影像的患者共三百七十五人，發現每四到五人中，就有一個人下顎第一大臼齒有三個牙根，甚至百分之十八的人有四個牙根。

雖然研究樣本都是病患，但傅鍔強調，多牙根絕非疾病，只要牙齒健康，完全不用處理。唯一的風險是，牙根藏在下顎骨骼，擠在一起可能擠壓牙肉，可能讓牙齦較薄，如果刷牙粗魯或口腔清潔不良，一旦引起牙周病，破壞恐更嚴重。

三總也為廿多位牙根外露的牙周病患進除細小牙根切除手術，幫助患者清潔更徹底，以挽回臼齒，傅顎也提醒其他醫師，為病患做根管治療時，不要忽略細小牙根裡的神經。

臼齒主要的功能是咀嚼食物，傅鍔說，過去祖先留下來適應環境的基因，但現在食物精緻，已派不上用場，反倒讓清潔不易，容易蛀牙，預防之道是要把牙刷乾淨，但不要太用力。

對於三總這項發現，台北醫學大學附設醫院副院長鄭信忠說，第一大臼齒有三根牙根可說是東方人的特色，多牙根雖增加牙周病潛在風險，但不表示一定會得牙周病。
