今年7月15日我從服務了37載的台北榮總退休；同事們頻頻打探：還未屆退休年齡的我，被哪家醫院挖角？很少人知道，我罹患膀胱癌、肺癌兩種原發癌症，而我的妻子才癌逝不到一年；這兩、三年間，我從臨床醫師到重症病人家屬、到重症病人、從臨床實驗主持人、到申請成為癌症新藥受試者被拒（罹兩種癌不符收案條件）；經歷這麼多角色，身分在白袍和病床間流轉。

工作沒有完成式

最後一次化療在5月中完成，整個治療過程，我照樣上班；一方面是多年來照顧的感染者上千人，一時找不到人接手；一方面，我也沒想過：一向被看病、查房、教學等工作塞滿了的自己，停下來要做什麼？總以為人生終點還很遠，等工作完成後再說。問題是，臨床工作似乎永遠沒有完成式，才忙完這個，下個工作已排滿；才看完一個病人，仍有無數病人在等，甚至，眼前工作還未告一段落，就被更急、更迫切的任務或病人打斷了；所以，我永遠只能「拚命幹！」 很少有停下腳步的時候。

永難釋懷的缺席

我太太也是肺癌，發現時已轉移骨骼和腦部，從病發到過世共三年。太太生病後，全家曾利用緩解期間規畫了一趟旅行。我知道她在病後對人生有了不同體悟，也對旅行充滿期待；但，結婚以來，很少陪太太出遊的我，明知她餘日無多，生命充滿變數，我還是被工作和病人追得團團轉。這趟旅行我還是選擇缺席了，沒想到，這件事也成了我心裡難以釋懷的痛。

她去年8月過世，那是周一，我看夜診。她過世，感覺整個心像被掏空一般；但是，病人已預約掛了號，有人從遠地趕來，有人可能是放棄了重要聚會來報到，也可能有人服藥不適應，需要調整；而我，無法馬上找到代診醫師，也無法因個人因素失信病人，只能把太太後事安排交給女兒，那天，照樣看診到近九點。

人生沒有再一次

看完診後，自己來到門診追蹤檢查；領完號碼牌，候診室常一等兩、三個小時；偶遇同事出來叫號時發現我，好意安排遇空號時先檢查。我想起妻子生前看診情景：她也跟我一樣吧？強忍著不適，坐在這裡一等幾個小時；而自己先生就在不遠處，是這家醫院的資深醫師，卻永遠在為別人忙碌，甚至沒有陪自己看過一次診。想到這裡，悔恨交加的椎心之痛，幾乎要將自己淹沒了。

太太過世，身邊的支柱倒了，才發現自己有如陷身巨大黑洞，生活根本難再運轉下去。所以，我現在總告訴人家：兩句話不要說；那就是：「以後再說」、「早知道」，機緣不可能一再給我們「再來一次」的優待。

沒有人是不可被取代的

難道他的病人就會等死嗎?

馬上會有其他醫師接手照顧
病人最多說句
啊! 好可惜啊!這麼好的醫師. 怎麼就走了呢?
