近年來，「肥胖不利健康」的認知已經逐漸被大眾所接受，根據統計，兒童時期肥胖的人，有42％～63％的人長大之後仍然肥胖，過度肥胖就像高血脂、高血糖等慢性疾病一樣，對身體健康有很大的影響，加上明星、流行文化的渲染，漸漸的，「減肥」幾乎已經成為台灣社會的全民運動。

而所謂的肥胖並不只是體重計上面數字的多寡，是否過重應該是由身體裡面所含的脂肪比率來判斷，也就是一般常聽到的「體脂肪率標準」，當一個人體重很輕，但體脂肪率標準卻完全超出正常範圍的話，那麼得到肥胖相關疾病的機率甚至比一般的肥胖者更高，因此絕對不能輕忽體脂肪率標準。
