年產數千恆星 怪物銀河亮相

由日本國立天文台、東京大學等機構為首組成的日本、美國、墨西哥國際研究小組，在南美智利使用「亞他加馬次毫米波望遠鏡」（ＡＳＴ）陣列，觀測到離地球約一百一十五億光年的宇宙，正以超出一般銀河的一千倍速度，形成一個巨大的「怪物銀河」。這是世界上首次的觀測，研究報告刊登在七日出刊的英國《自然》科學雜誌上。


包含地球在內的銀河系每年都會產生好幾個恆星，「怪物銀河」一年則可暴增數千個恆星，比地球所在的銀河系還要重上好幾倍，因此被稱作「怪物」。


過去也有天文學家曾經觀測到怪物銀河中的個別星球，但是這次的研究小組則成功地在水瓶座方向，約一個滿月大小的範圍內，拍攝到卅個群聚的恆星，這也是至今發現到最多星體聚集在一起的實例。


怪物銀河因為被大量的氣體和星塵等覆蓋，就像是蒙上一層烏雲，很難用一般的可見光和紫外線望遠鏡觀測，這次是採用電波望遠鏡才得以觀測到。所使用的望遠鏡則是設置在智利亞他加馬沙漠海拔四千八百公尺的高山上。


日本國立天文台的研究員田村陽一指出：「這是頭一次瞭解到怪物銀河的分布情況，希望今後的研究能有助於更近一步瞭解銀河系的進化過程，以解開銀河系形成的謎底。」
