中國大陸武漢自去年 12 月底爆發不明肺炎疫情，截至 1 月 5 日為止已有 59 起疑似病例，在香港也已有 38 例，外界普遍憂心恐為 SARS 或 MERS 再現；然而，根據世界衛生組織（ WHO ）與外媒最新報導，武漢肺炎初步判定應為新型冠狀病毒。

根據《路透社》、《彭博社》等外媒報導，世界衛生組織於週三（ 1 月 8 日）針對武漢不明肺炎發表聲明，表示武漢肺炎患者很可能感染了新型的冠狀病毒（ coronavirus ） ，目前需要更多資訊，才能了解確切病原與疫情的擴散方式。

WTO 在聲明中表示：「針對武漢肺炎案例的初期資訊顯示，冠狀病毒很可能是造成此群聚病例的病原」，聲稱目前中國已透過實驗室檢測排除為 SARS 和 MERS 病毒，「然而，尚無法排除為冠狀病毒的可能」，並表示雖然此病毒會在部分病患身上出現嚴重病情，但似乎不會輕易人傳人。

此外，根據大陸《央視》報導，截至 2020 年 1 月 7 日晚間 9 點，針對武漢肺炎，大陸相關實驗室檢出一種新型冠狀病毒，並獲得該病毒的全基因組序列，經核酸檢測方法共檢出新型冠狀病毒陽性結果 15 例；專家組認為，本次不明原因的病毒性肺炎病例的病原體，初步判定為新型冠狀病毒。

該報導並指出，冠狀病毒是一類主要引起呼吸道、腸道疾病的病原體，除了人類以外，還可感染豬、牛、貓、犬、貂、駱駝、蝙蝠、老鼠、刺猬等多種哺乳動物及鳥類；目前已知的人類冠狀病毒共有 6 種，其中 4 種冠狀病毒在人群中較為常見，致病性也較低，一般僅引起類似普通感冒的輕微呼吸道症狀，但嚴重的如 SARS 和 MERS 冠狀病毒，則可引起嚴重的呼吸系統疾病；並稱引起此次疫情的新型冠狀病毒不同於已發現的人類冠狀病毒，對該病毒的深入了解需要進一步科學研究。
