曾經聽父親說過一個故事，不知有多少成分是真的。他說當年老蔣總統到了榮民總醫院就診，需要打點滴，那麼重要的大人物，當然是要請出專家來打囉。那麼選定的專家是誰呢，大家公推麻醉科主任。
在當年的榮總，抽血打針最厲害的應該是實習快結束的實習醫師，絕對不會是大主任，可是這種重要人物怎麼會請實習醫師出馬呢？
打針這種技術，天份跟練習都有關係，每家醫院中通常都會產生幾位公認的高手，專門解決各種疑難雜症。麻醉科主任身居高職，打點滴……應該是年輕時的故事了，麻醉科醫師公認的幾項戰技：中央靜脈導管、腰椎穿刺、氣管內插管……好像也沒有打點滴這一項。
已經很久沒有打靜脈了，又得在眾目睽睽之下幫VIP打針，壓力可想而知。結果第一針……沒有打上，醫師開始發抖，頭上開始冒汗，握針的手就更不穩了，總統也看到了，安慰醫師說沒關係，慢慢來，但是醫師心理還是七上八下，擔心萬一一直打不上，失了面子事小，還可能官位不保，甚至於……
第二針……用顫抖的手，醫師終於把總統的針打上了，所有的人都鬆了一口氣，官位也保住了。
面子 常會逼死自己
回到那個時代的場景，如果我是那個麻醉科主任，會去找個沒有身家調查過，但是技術一流的實習醫師來打針嗎？恐怕面子會掛不住吧。但是面子……常常就是把自己逼到困境的元兇。依照中華民國外科醫學史的書中記載，台灣的全身麻醉，是從榮總的王學仕醫師開始的，他當時會帶著麻醉機坐車去台大，幫台大醫院的病人麻醉。其實台北榮總的麻醉科，還有另外一個故事……
SARS時候，有兩位第一年的住院醫師幫病人放氣管內插管染煞過世，那時的住院醫師們，幫SARS病患插管時壓力都非常大，雖然已經做了全身防護，還是忐忑不安，因為只要一個小閃失，代價就可能是要付出自己的生命，偏偏放氣管內插管的人員，有時都是第一線的菜鳥，技術不是那麼純熟……
在醫院裡面，插管技術最純熟的，當數麻醉科醫師，再過來就是資深的內科住院醫師，新光醫院當時內科的資深住院醫師們，二話不說，接下了大部分的插管任務，也幸運的沒有人染煞。
在台北榮總狀況又不一樣了，幾個麻醉科醫師們自己跳了出來，主動的組成了插管團隊，幫懷疑染煞的病患插管，我同學張文貴說：「插管，是我們麻醉科最重要的5項戰技之一，我們來弄，往往只需要幾秒鐘就搞定，這時暴露在病毒下的風險就減少非常多，何必讓菜鳥新手去冒那個險呢？」
他說的一副雲淡風輕，好像這樣高貴的騎士精神一點都沒有什麼，可是對於住院醫師來說，他們感受到的溫暖是言語無法形容的。
到了發SARS獎勵金的時候，這些麻醉科醫師分不到錢，因為獎金的分配，是依照顧時間在分的，照顧一天可以拿多少錢都有一定的數字，但是雖然插管是最危險的時刻，因為時間太短，卻得不到什麼獎勵金，我相信對這些人格高尚的騎士們來說，這些金錢根本不算什麼，在他們心中，最重要的是做對的事情，而不是錢財。

再以跑百米速度拿便當回房間吃
住我左邊的每天都咳嗽
住我右邊的喘得很厲害確定是SARS被送回醫院插管
能夠平安出來真的是祖先保佑
