兩國對峙，一大一小。小國怎麼辦？

「如果小國謙卑的對待大國，就會取得大國。」老子兩千五百年前如此說。（「小國以下大國，則取大國」：道德經六十一章）

他老糊塗了嗎？我們不禁懷疑。

五百年前，義大利北部的城邦翡冷翠（Firenzi之義文發音即佛羅倫斯）與最強的城邦教庭羅馬交惡。

羅馬長期以來是政治、宗教、文化的中心。而翡冷翠屬邊陲地區，當兩千年前羅馬帝國興盛時，它不過是名不見經傳的小村落。

公元一四七九年底，翡冷翠已被羅馬聯軍圍困一年多，將城破國亡，危在旦夕。

當時，翡冷翠君主羅倫佐（Lorenzo de Medici）簡從厚禮前赴另一城邦—也是羅馬重要的戰友—拿坡里。談判三個月後，羅倫佐說服其國王費蘭德（Ferrante）退出羅馬聯盟，並造成骨牌效應，羅馬撤兵。

羅倫佐靠的不只是他從小被父親培養的外交長才、武藝膽識（曾獲比武冠軍），更重要的是他對詩歌、哲學、藝術的文化修養。三個月的談判，怎麼可能都是一本正經的政治和軍事議題？

這是善用軟實力—文化精神的力量—保家衛國的實例。翡冷翠的軍力和國際影響力遠遜於羅馬，可是它沒有被擊倒。

然而翡冷翠的成功還不止於此。

面對羅馬威脅，羅倫佐雖然以智取勝，但並未自外於羅馬。之後，他派家人進入羅馬，服務教庭。他過世後又廿一個寒暑，公元一五一三年，羅倫佐之次子當選為教皇里奧十世（Leo X）。再十年後，另一子當選為教皇克裡門七世（Clement VII）。

翡冷翠不止沒有被羅馬消滅，反而經由積極參與和侍奉羅馬，成了羅馬的主人！原來老子並不糊塗，而是智慧超人。

羅倫佐發揚其祖父開啟的傳統—極力扶植藝術家（如文藝復興三傑：達文西、米開朗基羅、拉斐爾），發明家，詩人，哲學家。翡冷翠於是成為文藝復興的搖籃，其影響經由羅馬傳播到整個義大利，再由義大利擴散到全歐洲，由歐洲改變了全世界。

翡冷翠的啟示對台灣有很大的意義。

台灣的強項不是軍事力量，不是經濟規模，不是國際政治，甚至目前也不是高效能的政府。台灣到底有無強項？有。我們的強項並不多見於媒體，而隱藏在民間社會：我們無遠弗屆的的愛心，我們創意的生活方式—如細膩的飲食文化，我們有禮、善良、好客的公民素質，我們多元的靈性追求等等。

中國大陸在習近平領導下的願景是「中國夢」。我們民間社會的強項正可提供海峽彼岸大國崛起所缺乏且需要的養分，以促其「中國夢」的實現。

月前赴福建平潭看兩岸實驗區。一天花一億人民幣建設，才兩年，荒島已具先進環保現代化大都市的外形。令人震撼！可是細看豪華旅館房間，竟然沒有衣櫥！這正是大陸崛起的縮影：氣魄有餘，細膩不足。

苗栗縣公館鄉玉谷村的一棟品茶別墅常有大陸藝人長住。花人民幣八千元來台竟然為「追求心靈的自由…我們哪裡都不去。」

數年前，積極赴各地救災的慈濟功德會，已獲北京授權成首家非大陸人主持的民間基金會。

台灣扮演良性社會催化劑，善意的協助大陸人民提升生活品質。大陸社會優質化，民心安定滿足，自然有助於東亞地區的和平。台灣也因此受益。

誰知道數十年後，台灣生活的細膩、心靈的富足不會經由大陸傳播至世界？
