So if you come across an apple in the store and it's label is 4922, it's a
conventional apple grown with herbicides and harmful fertilizers. If it has
a sticker 99222, it's organic and safe to eat.

使用水果貼紙標籤最早可溯至1960年代紐西蘭出口的蘋果，貼紙上註有品種名與包裝業者的品牌名稱等訊息。時至今日，小小的水果貼紙可提供更多的資訊如規格(size)、品級(grade)或生產地等。而現在漸趨國際化的四位數編碼乃是由美國的生鮮產品運銷協會(The Produce Marketing Association, PMA)開創，其主要鑑於1980末期，美國所有的市售商品除生鮮食品外皆已被納入標準化的條碼系統(bar code)，方便各產業及零售業做銷貨管理及獲得正確的銷售資訊，但生鮮蔬果品項繁多又進貨頻仍，一直缺乏有系統的營銷資訊系統，此對零售業者管理上極為不便且常不得已將數種不同品種以平均價混和出售，而難以賺取應有的差價。因此PMA於1990年為生鮮蔬果開發了一套標準化的四位數編碼系統，稱之為PLU碼(Price Look Up code)，供作零售業者發展資料庫(database)的基礎及為生鮮產品訂出符合實質價值的價位。在執行上則是由其轄下的生鮮電子辨識評議會(Produce Electronic Identification Board, PEIB)負責編碼與授碼事項。
PLU所用的四位碼一般皆以「4」開頭，編碼由4011起至4959止，每組四位碼代表一特定品種、規格或等級及產區之組合，但個別的碼址並不具特別的意義...

The IFPS shall be responsible for deciding the assignment and definition of qualifying prefix digits
for international recognition. At present, only three digits have been allocated:
