The rainbow rose is a rose which has had its petals artificially coloured.

The colouring method exploits the rose's natural processes by which water is drawn up the stem. By splitting the stem and dipping each part in a differently coloured water, the colours are drawn into the petals resulting in a multicoloured rose.[1][2]

Besides roses, other cut flowers like the chrysanthemum, caryophyllaceous, hydrangea and orchidaceous can also be coloured using the same method.[citation needed]

History
The rainbow rose has been developed by a collaboration of two Dutch companies, River Flowers and F.J. Zandbergen & Zn. Together they formed Happy Roses to produce and market rainbow roses.[3]

River Flowers started as a cultivator of chrysanthemums. In 2004, they developed a method of adding colour to the petals of chrysanthemums and applied for a worldwide patent.[3][4]

Zandbergen is a large company which specialises in everything to do with roses. When they happened to come into contact with River Flowers in 2006, the colouring process was tried on roses and found to be successful.[3]

Cultivars
A lot of research was done to find the best cultivar for this unique colouring process, with the result that the Vendela Rose is the only cultivar that absorbs all the different colourants perfectly.[citation needed] The Vendela Rose is a Hybrid Tea, cream rose that only grows in Holland. When the rose is in full bloom it has a flower diameter of 13 cm (5.1 in) and a stem length of 60–100 cm (24–39 in). The rose isn’t scented.

Other cultivars that can be used for this colouring process are Rosa La Belle and Rosa Avalanche+.[citation needed]

Colour combinations
The rainbow rose is available with different colour combinations. The most popular is the variant with all the colours of the rainbow. There are also the tropical variant with combinations of red/pink and yellow, and the ocean variant with combinations of green and blue.[1] Other colour combinations are also possible, though black and white is impossible to make.
