牙周病患提防阿茲海默症威脅

牙周病患者要小心阿茲海默症威脅。美國、丹麥研究團隊追蹤二十年資料發現，牙周、口腔疾病患者出現認知障礙的機率比一般人增加九倍之多，罹患阿茲海默症的風險較高。此外，口腔發炎也很可能造成腦部發炎、神經退化病變等。


美國紐約大學牙周病學與植牙學副教授安吉拉‧卡莫（Angela Kamer）為研究計畫主持人。卡莫博士表示，同樣是認知功能正常的兩個人，其中一人牙周沒有發炎或只是輕微發炎，另一人的牙周則明顯發炎，相較之下，牙周病患者較容易出現認知退化。


在二○○八年，卡莫博士發現，阿茲海默症患者的血液帶有較多牙周病發炎因子、抗體。這次研究團分析、比對一五二人資料，包含口腔發炎病史、認知功能好壞、智商變化等。研究追蹤達二十年，直到他們七十歲。研究成果發表於七月十六日在西班牙舉辦的二○一○年「國際牙醫學研究學會」（IADR）年會。


研究發現，和沒有牙周病、輕微牙周病患相比，七十歲牙周病患的認知功能明顯偏低，認知退化風險增加了九倍。五十歲的牙周病患也一樣，認知功能較差。很多因素都會影響認知功能，如肥胖、抽菸習慣等，即使將這些變數納入計算，結果還是顯示牙周病和認知退化大有關係。卡莫博士計畫進行更大規模研究，並針對不同種族做分析，進一步檢驗牙周病是否真會影響認知功能好壞。
