中國東部一種常見兒童疾病的爆發導致數十名兒童死亡﹐雖然這不足以造成恐慌﹐但已經引起了國際衛生組織官員的注意。

據安徽省衛生部門稱﹐安徽東部的阜陽市爆發的手足口病已經導致20名兒童死亡﹐受感染兒童總數約為1,200人﹐其中341人仍在住院。官方媒體新華社上週日晚間的一篇報導稱﹐疫情是3月初開始爆發的﹐並稱該市衛生部門已經證實這種疾病是由EV71病毒引發的。

手足口病常見於嬰幼兒﹐症狀有發燒、皮疹和口部疼痛﹐與牛、豬和羊等家畜可能感染的口蹄疫沒有任何關係。手足口病很少會導致人死亡。絕大多數手足口病患者可在一週左右時間恢復。據亞特蘭大疾病控制與預防中心(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)網站上的數據﹐曾出現過幾起手足口病致人死亡的病例﹐馬來西亞和台灣分別在1997年和1998年報導過這種情況。

儘管導致此次中國兒童患病的病毒家族在全球範圍內都有發現﹐而且具體的病毒種類近年來在中國也曾被報導過﹐但世界衛生組織(World Health Organization)駐北京官員司徒農(Cris Tunon)在聲明中表示﹐我們認為情況仍應引起關注﹐尤其是目前報導的死亡率同前些年相比出現了上升。

據新華社報導﹐中國衛生部長陳竺上週六赴阜陽視察﹐這也顯示出對此次疫情的重視程度。

中國的地方衛生官員過去有時會在初期刻意降低疫情的嚴重程度﹐結果是在威脅迅速上升時令人們防不勝防。

在家長帶著患病的兒童紛紛到醫院就診後﹐謠言開始在阜陽流傳。北京的《民主與法制時報》一篇文章稱﹐沒有官方的關於“怪病”的任何信息﹐市井的“謠言”變得恣肆而扭曲。有人稱這種病是“小兒非典”。

安徽省衛生廳新聞辦副主任馮立中說﹐在3月份開始爆發疫情時﹐尚不清楚這是什麼疾病﹐因此他們向上級衛生部門匯報了此事。他說﹐最終有關官員到達阜陽進行了10來天的調查﹐並將病毒樣本送到了北京進行分析。

自2003年中國爆發非典型肺炎並最終導致全球近800人死亡以來﹐世界衛生組織官員就一直擔心中國大陸拖延疫情暴發的匯報時間可能阻礙迅速做出反應和為抑制疫情所作的各種努力。

香港衛生防護中心(Center for Health Protection)在4月24日發佈新聞稿﹐詳細披露了一位來自大陸的7歲男孩被診斷出手足口病的病例﹐距這名兒童住進香港醫院僅有3天時間。
