加拿大空服員杜加（Gaetan Dugas）1984年因愛滋病逝世，被指是讓源於非洲的愛滋病在北美擴散的「零號患者」（Patient 0），長久以來他一直背負這個污名。如今一項跨國研究顯示，愛滋病其實早在1970年代就進入北美，杜加的「零號患者」稱號，其實是拼字誤會加上媒體渲染的一場烏龍。
刊登於《自然》（Nature）期刊的公衛歷史研究報告發現，愛滋病早在1970年左右就由加勒比海傳入紐約市，之後逐漸向美西蔓延，而杜加只是其中一名受感染者。研究共同作者、劍橋大學公衛歷史學家麥凱（Richard McKay）指出，杜加是「史上最被妖魔化的患者之一」。
法新社報導，「零號患者」的整個故事源起於1982年，當時美國疾病防治中心（CDC）發現南加州洛杉磯一帶有數名男子出現與性行為有關的罕見致命肺部感染。科學家開始訪談患者，企圖重建他們的社會關係網絡以找出感染源，結果許多人都提到杜加。麥凱指出，科學家給杜加的編號是057，但因他是住在紐約的法裔加拿大籍人士，並非來自研究主要地點洛杉磯，因此科學家在關於他的筆記中加註英文字母「O」，代表「加州以外」（Outside-of-California）。不料有人誤解其意，以為是數字「0」，於是「零號患者」的稱號不脛而走。
當時尚未出現「愛滋病」（AIDS，後天免疫不全症候群）的病名，但衛生官員已發現感染情況嚴重，洛杉磯逾65%男同志都曾與逾千名性伴侶往來，逾75%在訪談前1年內就有超過50名性伴侶。其中杜加提供了訪談前3年內共750名性伴侶中72人的身分，遠多於其他受訪談病患。學者認為，這種種特殊之處，加上他的姓名罕見易記，都促使他日後惡名遠播。
「零號患者」杜加1984年逝世，年僅31歲。同年出爐的訪談研究報告，將「零號患者」描繪成將愛滋病從美東傳到美西的樞紐。1987年，記者席爾茲（Randy Shiltz）又出版愛滋病專書《世紀的哭泣》（And the Band Played On），指杜加得知罹病後仍從事危險性行為，且事後才告知性伴侶他罹病的事實。該書後來又拍成紀錄片，極具影響力。
除了以公衛歷史角度洗刷杜加的「冤屈」外，研究共同作者、美國亞歷桑納大學教授沃樂比（Michael Worobey）研發的基因分析新技術「鑽入核糖核酸」（RNA jackhammering），也提供愛滋病在美散播的科學證據。
他檢驗1978至79年逾2000份國男子的血液樣本DNA，發現HIV病毒當時已呈現高度基因多樣性，亦即已在美國本土傳播了一段時間。雖然在洛杉磯爆發群聚感染現象後，才引發當局注意，但溯其源頭發現HIV病毒是來自加勒比海，經由紐約傳入美國本土。　（李寧怡／綜合外電報導）
